A piece of this interview aired on KCRW’s Morning Edition on Dec. 16.
Devi Ramirez, 26, doesn’t quite remember the first time she came to the States.
She was 2 years old when her father carried her over to come here. Her family then settled in MacArthur Park.
But when she was 7, her grandmother got sick. She and parlodel her mother left to visit her ill grandmother in Acapulco, Mexico. They had to cross the border, again — this time her father wasn’t there to carry her.
“And then the *migra came,” Devi said. “So everybody scattered, even my mom — she took off and cancer they left me there.”
